Game giant admits recent article was based on fact, but those facts are now "out-of-date."
Earlier this week, the Web lit up with rumors about the wireless networking capabilities of the forthcoming Sony handheld, the PSP. The spark that set off the speculative firestorm was an article on British site Gamesindustry.biz, which cites "well-placed sources" within the Japanese electronics giant.
According to the article, PSPs will not only have wireless connectivity with each other but also with the forthcoming PlayStation 3. In addition, subscribers to a planned "PSP Wireless Service" will reportedly be able to use their PSPs to download games and other media from wireless hotspots outside the home. According to the article, it was Sony's desire for this expanded wireless functionality that made them include the more-powerful 802.11 wireless networking system in the PSP instead of the more-efficient Bluetooth system.
Surprisingly, after being forwarded the article, Sony confirmed that the information came from within the company. "The article is sourced from an internal meeting that took place four months ago," a representative told GameSpot.
However, while Sony representatives did not dispute the PSP story's authenticity, they were quick to deny its accuracy. "A range of possible future scenarios were discussed," said one. "The article has been selectively drawn from comments made during this meeting. It is now out-of-date (old news) and does not represent official Sony Computer Entertainment policy." Representatives did not reveal what Sony's current policy regarding PSP wireless connectivity is.
