The near-final game goes through final tech testing.
October 04, 2004 - Halo 2, i.e., the most wanted game on the Xbox this fall, is, as they say in some parts of the world, "coming along nicely." More specifically, Bungie's first-person shooter sequel has moved from the building stage to the final testing and checking stage, according to Bungie.net
"It isn't literally the last update of course (to Bungie's site), since there's lots to do and say between now and November 9th, but I can honestly say that there's no more updating on the progress of the game, since the game is done," said Frank O'Connor, Bungie.net's overlord of online stuff.
As part of the finalization process, the near-final Halo 2 has been shipped to RTC (Release to Certification) and will be dumped from eight digital tapes to a DVD for final testing. An RTC check encompasses bug checks, crash reports, suitability for DVD fabrication and other minor but very necessary checks in the finalization process. RTC, however, does not equal "going gold," which, is a few more steps down the line.
Many Bungie employees are now able to take short vacations and, according to O'Connor, the offices are "eerily quiet." They're taking some time off before returning to support the final process of the game's completion, the marketing, public relations and promotions to accompany its shipment on November 9, 2004. The remaining employees appear to find pure joy in teasing us by playing all-day online Halo 2 games in their offices.
Bungie is also in the process of ramping up its Website. Although you can build your clan in Halo 2, you can also build, maintain and track it on Bungie's Website (Bungie.net), which should then see a massive traffic increase.
We'll have more on Halo 2's development when Bungie.net says so.
